What does it mean for children to hear, see, and experience music early in life? Perhaps it is a fleeting pleasure, something that briefly passes through their ears and quickly fades away. But there is also the possibility that a song sung together, a tune from a speaker, or a live concert can create a lasting impression, planting a seed that may grow in unexpected directions.

Many of us remember musical experiences from early in life and how they lit small or even large sparks within us. Such sparks are what the next award recipient continues to ignite, time and again. With his presence, musical talent, storytelling, and unwavering belief in the importance of childhood, he reminds us that within the small, there is all that is grand and gives life meaning—curiosity, openness, freedom from prejudice, and a break from the rational search for truths, where the world around us is only understood in certain fixed categories.
